Robert Watson is a Ph.D. Candidate, French Literature and Jewish Studies, in the Department of French and Italian. He specializes in Postcolonial Francophone Literatures and Visual Cultures of the Maghreb, Middle East and Quebec.

During 2011-2012, he was a Graduate Dissertating Fellow at the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities at Vanderbilt, a program bringing together exemplary dissertating scholars engaging in interdiscplinary work.  He successfully defended his dissertation “Cities of Origin, Cities of Exile: Maghrebi Jewish Diasporic Life-Writing in French, 1985-2012” in April and will graduate in August.

In his free time, Robert enjoys organic gardening, seeing classic, foreign and independent films on campus and at the Belcourt Theatre, going to concerts, traveling in the deep south, and being outdoors.
