I found while watching the video posted by Boston dynamics showing the dog walking and interacting, I was reacting as if the dog were real. For example, when the dog was kicked, I shuddered and as it walked smiled and thought it was cute. While, I am a major lover of dogs and may be biased, it seems that the robot having similar motion to a normal dog was enough for me to respond as if it were real. Maybe this robot’s high function and low similarity in appearance to dogs sits at the first peak of the Uncanny Valley curve, which was where the author of Uncanny Valley suggested engineers aim for. Does my bias as a dog lover affect how I see the dog? Is the dog uncanny to some?
