The Implications of Computerized Therapy

This linked article describes a future of  (as well as come current and past examples) computational therapy. A program mentioned in the Freudian Robot chapter, ELIZA, is described as a program built on the principals of psychologist Carl Rodgers, which is interesting because Rogers stressed introspection as a core instrument of psychoanalysis. Perhaps because ELIZA was designed to simulate human interaction, the programmers thought that though a series of questions that impliment the user’s previous phrases and force the user to introspect, the user would project an aspect of their own humanity onto ELIZA.
