The Ultimate Machine

The link below shows several videos of people’s takes on the ultimate machine. Variations include using legos, and having a machine that unplugs itself when switched on, rather than hitting an off switch.

Our fascination with the ultimate machine gives us a clue that there is more to this machine than what is at its surface. The fact that this machine’s sole purpose and function is to turn itself off is a frightening concept. It makes us think about our own beliefs and ideas about the meaning of life. This machine also references the “death drive” or “thanatos” suggested by Freud. It forces us to confront the possibility that there may be some driving force within us that tends towards self-destruction.
