Second Life provides a very interesting Virtual Reality experience. It’s slightly eerie how the environment is programmed to mimic the natural environment; for example, the water moves in a way that mimics real waves. These small details help to make the game feel authentic and more thoroughly representative of reality. I found the gait of the avatars to be interesting too, as it was clear that the forms and figures moved in a seemingly organic and “human” manner. It was also strange interacting with the other avatars and seeing other people in this virtual environment – and knowing full well that behind these avatars were people at their computer monitors, just like me. I chose an avatar (female, dark hair, thin) that most closely resembled me in an attempt to make the program as “real” as possible for me. However, no one in the program has any way of knowing what I look like or who I am – they only see the avatar and my username and that is the basis of my identity in the program.
