It feels as if half the country is either under water or on fire, and the effect on we as individuals can feel overwhelming and hopeless.\u00a0We see that climate change is upon us, but what can we do?\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3268\/2021\/09\/Southern_Ferstival_of_Books_2021_final_RGB-767x1024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-391\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3268\/2021\/09\/Southern_Ferstival_of_Books_2021_final_RGB-767x1024-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Southern_Ferstival_of_Books_2021_final_RGB-767x1024\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3268\/2021\/09\/Southern_Ferstival_of_Books_2021_final_RGB-767x1024-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3268\/2021\/09\/Southern_Ferstival_of_Books_2021_final_RGB-767x1024.jpg 767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As citizens and public humanists, we can educate ourselves, and we can remind ourselves of the\u00a0wonders of our planet that are\u00a0visible\u00a0in everything that blooms, flies, or walks.<strong> This year, we at Humanities Tennessee are especially pleased to partner with the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities on a track of sessions at the Southern Festival of Books called \u201cEnvironments.\u201d<\/strong> Through a series of online sessions, we will talk about climate change with scholars, scientists, and novelists whose work helps us to understand what is happening and to imagine a different way forward. Some highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Novelists\u00a0<strong>Benjamin\u00a0Labatut<\/strong>\u00a0(<i>When We Cease to Understand the World<\/i>),\u00a0<strong>Jeff\u00a0VanderMeer<\/strong>\u00a0(<i>Hummingbird Salamander: A Novel<\/i>) and <strong>Kim Stanley Robinson<\/strong> (<i>Ministry for the Future<\/i>), whose books have earned great critical and popular acclaim, using climate change as the literary jumping off point for imagining different worlds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Nature writers\u00a0including\u00a0<strong>J. Drew Lanham<\/strong> (<i>Sparrow Envy: Field Guide to Birds and Lesser Beasts<\/i>), <strong>Kathleen Dean Moore<\/strong> (<i>Earth&#8217;s Wild Music: Celebrating Life in a Time of Extinction<\/i>),\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Aimee\u00a0Nezhukumatathil<\/strong>\u202f(<i>World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments<\/i>), whose books remind us of the beauty of the world around us.<\/li>\n<li>Environmental justice advocate <strong>Miguel de la Torre<\/strong>, whose book\u00a0<i>Gonna\u00a0Trouble the Water: Ecojustice, Water, and Environmental Racism\u00a0<\/i>asks hard questions about how systemic inequities means that climate change will most deeply affect those who are in the worst position to withstand and recover from it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These authors and others will share their knowledge, their experiences, and their thoughts\u00a0with Festival audiences\u00a0about where we go next. As with all Festival sessions, the audience is a key component, as the interaction and engagement in the humanities between writer and reader is the core of the event.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the environments track, we are exploring vital conversations around equity with a series of sessions around the theme \u201cA More Perfect Union.\u201d Participants in these sessions include authors <strong>Kristin\u00a0Kotes\u00a0du\u00a0Mez<\/strong>\u00a0(<i>Jesus and John Wayne<\/i>) <strong>Brian Broome<\/strong> (<i>Punch Me Up the Gods: A Memoir<\/i>) and National Ambassador of Young People\u2019s Literature<strong> Jason Reynolds<\/strong> (<i>Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>As last year, the\u00a0Festival\u00a0will take place entirely online due to worsening public health conditions related to the Covid virus. While we deeply regret that we are unable to gather in person as we had hoped to do, we are grateful from the lesson of 2020 that online sessions can be deeply meaningful and rewarding, and\u00a0that they\u00a0have the benefit of being available to much larger audiences than the in-person event.
