{"id":108,"date":"2019-01-15T20:02:44","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T20:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/sigma\/?page_id=108"},"modified":"2019-02-25T18:08:33","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T18:08:33","slug":"math-for-america-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/sigma\/project-description\/math-for-america-los-angeles\/","title":{"rendered":"Math for America Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mfala.org\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2988\/2019\/01\/1451245174.png\" alt=\"1451245174\" width=\"263\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfala.org\"><strong>Math for America Los Angeles<\/strong><\/a> (MfA LA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by the University of Southern California, Claremont Graduate University and Harvey Mudd College that aims to raise student achievement by improving secondary school mathematics and computer science teacher recruitment, retention, and quality in the greater Los Angeles area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MfA LA runs two fellowship programs: an Early Career Teaching Fellowship program for beginning teachers and a Master Teacher Fellowship (MTF) program for more experienced teachers. Both programs offer multi-year, comprehensive professional learning and support for teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Project SIGMa is a collaborative effort between the SIGMa researchers and practice partners at M<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">f<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A LA for multiple reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The practice partners at M<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">f<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A LA have a desire to improve their support for mathematics teachers\u2019 learning in their MTF program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">f<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A LA and their Fellows\u2019 mutual commitment stands to reduce participant turnover during the course of our study, important for developing longitudinal cases of teachers\u2019 learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">f<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A LA\u2019s focus on developing teachers\u2019 ambitious mathematics instruction in urban schools supports our understanding of what it takes to grow and implement this form of teaching in classrooms with historically underserved students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our focus on developing frameworks for formative feedback aligns with the organization\u2019s current goals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Math for America Los Angeles (MfA LA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by the University of Southern California, Claremont Graduate University and Harvey Mudd College that aims to raise student achievement by improving secondary school mathematics and computer science teacher recruitment, retention, and quality in the greater Los Angeles area.
