Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows 2008 R2 is expected to become available for sale through the ITS Software Store beginning September 1, 2009. R2 editions include:

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter
• Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
• Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
• Windows Web Server 2008 R2
• Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-based Systems
• Windows Server Language Pack

Windows Server 2008 (Datacenter with Hyper-V, Datacenter without Hyper-V, Enterprise with Hyper-V, Enterprise without Hyper-V, Standard with Hyper-V, Standard without Hyper-V, Web Server, Windows 2008 Server for Itanium-based Systems) will no longer be available for sale to departments through the Software Store beginning September 1, 2009. Departments may purchase Windows Server 2008 R2 and use the backward use rights of the Windows Server 2008 R2 license to install an earlier version of the Windows Server OS (e.g. 2008, 2003).

If a department has purchased Software Assurance for its Windows Server OS through the Software Store, Windows Server 2008 R2 will be a free upgrade. Software Assurance customers can download Windows Server 2008 R2 through the Software Store later this month. Customers may access the download by logging into the Software Store and clicking on “My Software”.

Windows Server 2008 R2 will became available for download to MSDN and TechNet subscribers mid August 2009.

Volume Activation:

• Activation is required for Windows Server 2008 R2
• Departments may activate locally against an ITS hosted KMS server
• Activation supports physical and virtual devices
• Activation will also be required for Windows 7 and the upcoming Microsoft Office 2010
