Fake Domain Renewal Alerts

Posted by on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in Blog.

The Software Store is receiving reports of spam domain registration renewal alerts. In addition, Network Solutions, Vanderbilt’s primary supplier for domain registrations, renewals, and transfers, sent an alert advising us that Network Solutions customers are receiving fake renewal notifications and/or invoices for DNS services related to their existing domain names. This is a deceptive sales tactic. The distributor of the communication appears to have obtained the contact data from the public WHOIS database.

If you receive an email alert about an expiring domain, follow these steps to verify the expiration of the domain:

1. Go to **http://networksolutions.com**
2. Click “WHOIS Search” under “Resources” at the bottom of the screen
3. Type the name of the domain in the “Search all WHOIS Records” box and click “Search”

The search results should show the expiration date, current registrar, and administrative contact for the domain.

You can also contact software.store@vanderbilt.edu and we can determine the expiration date for you.

Finally, the Software Store sends domain registration renewal alerts to the primary contact for the domain. If you receive a renewal alert from another party, please be aware the renewal alert may be spam.
