New Top Level Domains
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the public domain name system (DNS). Currently, the system includes 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .COM, .ORG, and .NET.
ICANN approved a plan more than two years ago to add hundreds of new gTLDs to the DNS. The new gTLD categories include:
- Business (19 TLDs)
- Real Estate (30 TLDs)
- Industry (21 TLDs)
- Geographic (85 TLDs)
- Money & Finance (32 TLDs)
- Culture & Life Style (113 TLDs)
- Sports & Recreation (44 TLDs)
- Technology (53 TLDs)
- Entertainment (42 TLDs)
- Food & Shopping (33 TLDs)
- Professions (38 TLDs)
- Health & Fitness (16 TLDs)
- Retail (38 TLDs)
- Education (19 TLDs)
- Government & Policies (7 TLDs)
- Travel & Leisure (12 TLDs)
- Faith (5 TLDs)
The Vanderbilt community will be able to register domains with the new extensions through the Vanderbilt Software Store. We expect to begin offering the new service in 2014.
