{"id":306,"date":"2013-09-02T23:17:02","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T04:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/spep\/?page_id=306"},"modified":"2016-09-09T10:48:06","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T15:48:06","slug":"current-projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/spep\/current-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt SPEP Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are\u00a0several research projects underway utilizing the SPEP\u2122\u00a0as a means\u00a0of translating\u00a0research into practice for the purpose of supporting broad juvenile justice system level improvements.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Juvenile Justice Reform and Reinvestment Initiative (JJRRI)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Juvenile Justice Reform and Reinvestment Initiative<\/span> was launched by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in collaboration with the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University and the\u00a0Peabody\u00a0Research Institute at\u00a0Vanderbilt University.\u00a0\u00a0This initiative\u00a0aims to help juvenile justice jurisdictions achieve the high level of accountability that is necessary to operate in an evidence-based and cost effective manner while building on the jurisdiction\u2019s current service delivery model. <ins cite=\"mailto:Mark%20Lipsey\" datetime=\"2013-09-02T11:28\">I<\/ins>t is expected that participating sites will see lower recidivism rates and improved cost effectiveness due to the greater effectiveness of their juvenile justice services. There are two main elements of the JJRRI: (1) implementation of the SPEP\u2122\u00a0with its implications for program and system improvement, and (2) an evaluation and cost-benefit analysis of this initiative. The cost-benefit analysis portion of this project is being conducted by The Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. A competitive selection process was used to select the participating sites from those that applied. This project began in 2012 and is ongoing. The participating sites are:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Delaware<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Iowa<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Milwaukee County<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For more information, please visit our reform partner&#8217;s (the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform and Georgetown University) project website:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cjjr.georgetown.edu\/jjsip\/jjsip.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/cjjr.georgetown.edu\/our-work\/jjrri\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Arizona SPEP Expansion\u00a0Project<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laotimes.com\/po-content\/uploads\/Web-under-construction.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for under construction\" width=\"321\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Queensland, Australia SPEP Implementation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laotimes.com\/po-content\/uploads\/Web-under-construction.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for under construction\" width=\"321\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Tennessee Department of Children&#8217;s Services\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Identification of Evidence-based DCS Service Providers.<\/span> Public Chapter 585, enacted by the Tennessee General Assembly restricts the majority of the Department of Children&#8217;s Services (DCS) expenditures of state funds on programs for the prevention or treatment of delinquent juveniles to those programs proven effective by scientific evidence.\u00a0 With the assistance of the Peabody Research Institute at Vanderbilt University, DCS is using the SPEP\u2122 scheme\u00a0to review its juvenile justice programs for their consistency with research\u00a0evidence and undertaking program\u00a0improvement plans based on the results.\u00a0\u00a0This project began in 2009 and\u00a0is ongoing.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Pennsylvania\u00a0Center for Crime and Delinquency\/Penn State EpisCenter Project<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laotimes.com\/po-content\/uploads\/Web-under-construction.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for under construction\" width=\"321\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Georgia\u00a0SPEP Implementation Project<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laotimes.com\/po-content\/uploads\/Web-under-construction.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for under construction\" width=\"321\" height=\"231\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">North Carolina Statewide Project<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">North Carolina statewide comprehensive strategy for evidence-based improvements using the SPEP\u2122<\/span>.\u00a0 In this project the North Carolina Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP) is expanding and further customizing application of the SPEP \u2122 to the needs and resources of DJJDP.\u00a0 Its goal is greater recidivism reductions, particularly for high risk youth.\u00a0 This project is a collaboration between the Comprehensive Strategy Group and the Peabody Research Institute at Vanderbilt University.\u00a0 It began in 2012 and is ongoing.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Juvenile Justice System Improvement Project (JJSIP)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Juvenile Justice System Improvement\u00a0Project<\/span> is a collaboration between the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University, the Peabody Research Institute at Vanderbilt University, and the Comprehensive Strategy Group.\u00a0 This project aims to improve the juvenile justice systems in the selected states through the use of &#8220;research-based decision-making, better targeting of risk and needs in service provision, improved risk reduction, program improvement though the implementation of evidence-based practices, and more cost-effective use of scarce resources&#8221;. Four states were selected to participate.\u00a0 In the beginning of the project, one jurisdiction in each state was chosen to serve as a demonstration site, after which\u00a0the project is\u00a0 to be expanded statewide.\u00a0 This project ran from 2011-2013.
