SSMV Students are Siemens Competition Winners

We are excited to announce that two seniors have been recognized as semifinalists and one has been named a regional finalist in the national Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology for high school students in recognition of their work on research projects
Able Shi won semifinalist and regional finalist for his project, “Targeted MerTK inhibition improves response of BRAF-mutant melanomas to vemurafenib”, Dr.Rebecca Cook’s lab in the Vanderbilt department of Cancer
Biology. completed through the SSMV. Both students also attend Martin Luther King, Jr.
Camron Shirkhodaie won semifinalist for his project, “Investigating the lymphotoxic activity of an ancient fungal pathogen of amphibians”, in Dr. Louise Rollins-Smith’s lab in the Vanderbilt department of Pathology, Microbiology, & Immunology Academic Magnet High School.
Able and Camron are two of the three semifinalists from Tennessee in 2014. Siemens named 97 regional finalists representing 22 states and Able is the single regional finalist representing Tennessee.
Students in the SSMV begin working with a Vanderbilt University faculty member in their junior year to complete a research internship. While in the laboratory, students contribute to the scientific research goals of the professor through completion of an independent project. Students then present this research project in several formats and compete in several national science competitions including the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology. SSMV students competing in this year’s competition are members of the class of 2015.
