Library Science is a subject about subjects. Libraries are the domain of domains. The old library with all its archived memories and the new library with its overflowing rivers of data. Both an institution and a concept; the library is beautiful buildings filled with treasures from the past AND the enterprise of organizing information for the creation of knowledge and discovery. Librarians are people who care about the process of knowing. Specialists in the general yet careful to preserve the tiniest detail so that one day it may spark a new creation. Librarians love the connections between things, the invisible space between the known and the unknown. We aspire to treat all information equally, describe it and then turn it loose. The library is large– it contains multitudes. I have many interests and could never choose between them. Librarianship is the thread that binds them all together.
