Children’s Literacy and Language Skills

Posted by on Thursday, August 24, 2017 in Uncategorized.

Drs. Jeannette Mancilla-Martinez, David Dickinson, Kathy Ganske, and Emily Phillips-Galloway will be conducting literacy research as part of a research-practitioner partnership with a Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) elementary school. Children’s language and literacy skills will be measured over the course of the next two academic years (though you would not be committing to working on this study for two years). The study will use direct standardized assessments, as well as classroom observations.

We are seeking undergraduate and graduate Research Assistants (RAs) to assist with data collection during fall (October-November 2017) and spring (April-May 2018). Data collection will last 3-4 weeks during each of the two time points, requiring roughly 15‐20 hours of your time each week during regular MNPS school hours (8 AM- 3 PM). Please note that you must have availability at least 2-3 days during the noted data collection weeks between MNPS school hours.

All students, including those just entering the program, are eligible to apply, and particularly those with an interest in one or more of the topics of the research (e.g., elementary education, language and literacy development, reading difficulties, and English language learners).

Additionally, you must have your own transportation as travel to the elementary school sites (located approximately 20 minutes from campus) will be necessary. The hourly pay will be $12-14/hour, depending on experience, and mileage will be reimbursed. Full paid training will take place in mid-September.

To apply, please reply by email to Janna McClain (janna.mcclain@vanderbilt.edu) with a
copy of your resume, qualifications, and a brief explanation of your interest in the project.

Applications will be considered immediately, until the positions are filled.
