(Photo credit: Merissa Mayo &#8211; program manager, Crowe lab)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The second annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vumc.org\/vvc\/events\/2017-vanderbilt-symposium-modeling-immunity\">Symposium on Modeling Immunity<\/a> was held April 27, 2017. The symposium focused on modeling and designing antibodies, and was hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/structbio.vanderbilt.edu\/faculty\/meiler.php\">Dr. Jens Meiler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vumc.org\/vvc\/person\/james-crowe-md\">Dr. James Crowe, Jr.<\/a> within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.structbio.vanderbilt.edu\/\">Vanderbilt Center for Structural Biology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vumc.org\/vvc\/\">Vanderbilt Vaccine Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over 100 people attended the symposium, including members of the Vanderbilt community and representatives from institutions from around the world. The event began with a welcome and introduction from Dr. Meiler. This was followed by keynote speaker Sarel Fleishman, Ph.D., of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/pages\/\">Weizmann Institute of Science<\/a> presenting \u201cAtomic design of new antibodies guided by structure and sequence information from natural antibodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipd.uw.edu\/people\/ipd-faculty-staff\/frank-dimaio\/\">Frank DiMaio, Ph.D.<\/a>, University of Washington \u2013 <em>Protein structure determination to atomic accuracy from cryoEM density using Rosetta<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bbs.yale.edu\/people\/steven_kleinstein.profile\">Steven Kleinstein, Ph.D.<\/a>, Yale School of Medicine \u2013 <em>Analysis of B cell antibody repertoires from next-generation sequencing<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/research\/faculty\/ward\">Andrew Ward, Ph.D.<\/a>, The Scripps Institute \u2013 <em>CryoEM as a tool to evaluate immune responses to vaccine candidates<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/structbio.vanderbilt.edu\/faculty\/meiler.php\">Jens Meiler, Ph.D.<\/a>, Vanderbilt University \u2013 <em>Structure prediction and computational design of antibody\/antigen interactions<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_807\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-807\" class=\"wp-image-807 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2261\/2017\/07\/GabyAlvarado_poster.jpeg\" alt=\"GabyAlvarado_poster\" width=\"432\" height=\"374\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabriela Alvarado presents her poster during the symposium. Trainees from the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/nextgenvaccines\/\">Vanderbilt Program for Next Generation Vaccines<\/a> presented updates on their current studies.
