Cristina Rivera Garza, author of the new Vanderbilt University Press book The Restless Dead: Necrowriting and Disappropriation<\/em><\/a>, has been named a 2020 MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The MacArthur Foundation awards its fellowships\u2014known colloquially as \u201cGenius grants\u201d\u2014annually to individuals for \u201cextraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits.\u201d Winners represent the leading minds in a diverse range of fields, including literature, social justice, science, and art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCristina Rivera Garza is a fiction writer interrogating culturally constructed notions of language, memory, and gender from a transnational perspective. Born in Mexico and a resident of the United States for over two decades, Rivera Garza is a prolific and multifaceted author of fiction, essays, and scholarship, including nearly twenty works in Spanish.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

Rivera Garza\u2019s The Restless Dead<\/em>\u00a0is the first English edition available of her book Los muertos ind\u00f3ciles<\/em>, translated by Robin Myers. It theorizes the act of writing in the face of various contemporary challenges, such as the question of individual versus collective authorship, the issue of writing in an era of death and violence, and the act of writing in relation to new technological platforms. <\/a>The Restless Dead<\/em> is the inaugural volume in Vanderbilt UP\u2019s Critical Mexican Studies<\/a> series, the first English-language, humanities-based academic monograph series devoted to the study of Mexico. Edited by Ignacio M. S\u00e1nchez Prado (Washington University in St. Louis), the Critical Mexican Studies series focuses on innovative works in the humanities that question the many received ideas that shape the field of Mexican studies.<\/span><\/p>\n
