Chancellor Zeppos Addresses USAC
Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos made his annual address to USAC at its March 2017 meeting and discussed several topics of concern to himself and USAC representatives.
Inclusion
The Chancellor repeated his recent objections to current U.S. policies regarding the exclusion of people from certain countries. In his view, the U.S. is home to many of the best universities in the world and people that are educating — and being educated — here should be welcome. He pointed out that many early Americans (including Vanderbilt’s second chancellor) also traveled abroad to study and brought back a wealth of knowledge that helped propel our advancements in science, industry and agriculture. “I am deeply concerned about issues that tear apart the social fabric of inclusion and diversity and position America as a nation that does not welcome people from all over the world.”
Restructuring
Zeppos mentioned that he is pleased with the outcome of the restructuring efforts that resulted in a split between the university and the medical center last year. According to the Chancellor, both organizations are prospering financially and moving forward. Despite some kinks, he believes that the restructuring is — and will continue to be — increasingly beneficial to VU staff who can now focus on working within a university and not within an organization tied to a large, growing, multi-state company system.
Nashville
Zeppos also addressed the rapid and continued growth of Nashville and how it affects the Vanderbilt community. He pointed out that elevated traffic congestion and housing costs are increasing commute times to campus. As such, the administration is considering various creative solutions that staff can expect to hear more about soon. The administration also continues to pursue its Land Use Planning Initiative.
