USAC Newsletter for July 2017

Posted by on Friday, July 28, 2017 in Archive, Newsletter.

Greetings from the University Staff Council!

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and were able to find some time to enjoy some rest and relaxation over the past couple of months. As the University is preparing for another academic year, USAC kicked off the 2017/2018 term earlier this month where we welcomed both new and returning representatives from over 20 different schools and departments across Vanderbilt.

The University Staff Advisory Council is here for YOU! We are an advisory group to administration and staff on issues, policies, and practices that affect the university and those served by the council. We are more than 90 elected individuals who in turn represent more than 3,000 full and part-time, exempt and non-exempt staff members who are not in a union-eligible job.

The council meets monthly where we have the opportunity to hear from leaders across the university who share information that is beneficial to staff. We will then send out a meeting report that will include detailed minutes and instructions on how to access the online videos of our presentations. Throughout the year we will be hearing from Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos, Vice Chancellor of Administration Eric Kopstain, and Vice Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Officer Barbara Carroll, to name a few.

To learn more about Staff Council or if you are interested in getting involved, please visit our website: vanderbilt.edu/usac. This website will also be a way that you can communicate with us any concerns you might have or if you want to tell us how great things are. We have answers to the most frequently asked questions as well as letting you know upcoming events that are happening in the Vanderbilt community.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and looking forward to what this next year brings!

Michael Pring
USAC President 2017/2018

Solar Eclipse

A historic total solar eclipse will traverse the United States on Monday, Aug. 21, and Nashville, which lies directly in the eclipse’s path, will have a front-row seat. The skies will begin to darken around noon, and at 1:27 p.m. the moon will completely blot out the sun for almost two minutes of total darkness. The sky will then gradually return to its normal brightness around 3 p.m. This is the first total solar eclipse to traverse the entire United States in 99 years.

The Office of the Provost has planned a number of campus events to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event, and they are open to the entire Vanderbilt community.
