{"id":3848,"date":"2022-07-06T16:02:41","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T21:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/vinsenews\/?p=3848"},"modified":"2022-07-06T16:02:41","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T21:02:41","slug":"meet-our-graduates-judson-ryckman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/vinsenews\/2022\/07\/meet-our-graduates-judson-ryckman\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Our Graduates: Judson Ryckman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3849 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"judson\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson-650x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my\/my-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1669\/2022\/07\/judson.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAANfQTsBd_-urIkI44wbmllth0hYDJBqCZI\">Judson Ryckman<\/a>\u00a0earned his PhD in\u00a0Vanderbilt University Electrical and Computer Engineering\u00a0at\u00a0Vanderbilt University\u00a0in 2013 under Prof. Sharon Weiss.\u00a0Judson\u2019s first exposure to academic research was through participation in a summer research experience for undergraduates which included regular use of\u00a0 VINSE\u00a0laboratories at their earlier location in Stevenson Center.\u00a0After graduating from Vanderbilt, Judson joined\u00a0Intel Corporation\u00a0in Santa Clara, CA as a research scientist and photonic design engineer, ultimately contributing toward the development and successful commercial release of Intel\u2019s first silicon photonics products (100G PSM4 and CWDM4).\u00a0During his time at Intel he coordinated closely with fab partners to ensure optimal performance and high yield of silicon photonic passive designs in 300\u00a0mm wafer scale processes, and cites his prior experiences at VINSE\u2019s and\u00a0Oak Ridge National Laboratory\u2019s cleanrooms as providing a \u201can excellent foundation for his work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 2016 Judson joined\u00a0Clemson University\u00a0as an Assistant Professor.\u00a0His research is centered in the field of nanophotonics which studies and harnesses light interaction with nanostructured materials and devices.\u00a0Within this domain he currently specializes in: (1) optical biosensors based on colorimetric and waveguide devices, (2) nanostructured silicon photonics for cybersecurity and enhanced light-matter interactions, and (3) scalable nanomanufacturing techniques for flat-optics and metasurfaces.
