Heat management is critical to keeping the chips behind computers and phones operational. Pantelides<\/a>, University Distinguished Professor of Physics and Engineering, William A. and Nancy F. McMinn Professor of Physics and professor of electrical engineering, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.ucas.ac.cn\/~wuzhou?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wu Zhou<\/a>, physical sciences professor at UCAS, successfully push the sensitivity of single-atom vibrational spectroscopy to the chemical-bonding-configuration extreme.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1425808\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1425808\" style=\"border: 0px;font-style: inherit;font-variant: inherit;font-weight: inherit;line-height: inherit;font-family: inherit;font-size: 22.7167px;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: middle;max-width: 100%;height: auto;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/De-Liang-Bao.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1425808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">De-Liang Bao<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers measured the vibrational patterns of individual atoms around silicon impurities in graphene, a step that can revolutionize the design of heat-conducting materials and structures that keep devices and batteries powering everyday technologies operational. The new precise measurements of the vibrational properties of graphene reveal novel understanding of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/graphene-and-beyond-the-wonder-materials-that-could-replace-silicon-in-future-tech-11616817603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wonder material<\/a>,\u201d with broad implications for graphene\u2019s use in all devices from nanoantennae\u2014used for biological and chemical sensing\u2014to supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderbilt postdoctoral scholar and co-first author De-Liang Bao was the key contributor to the theoretical component of the paper. UCAS graduate students, Mingquan Xu and Aowen Li, were key contributors to the experimental component. The good correlation between the experimental data and quantum calculations represents a breakthrough in understanding the role of local chemical bonding in controlling vibrational properties.<\/p>\n<p>A link to a news release issued by UCAS containing more details is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/english.cas.cn\/newsroom\/research_news\/phys\/202303\/t20230319_328404.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.
