RESOLVED: Delay in email delivery for some users

Posted by on Friday, July 18, 2014 in Outage.

Both issues were resolved between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM on 7/17.  While the characteristics were similar, these are two distinct and separate events.

The VUgmail issue occurred during change # 43643, the script used to update the external email address over-wrote the primary SMTP address with the same value for 51% of the undergraduate student population. This resulted in the senders receiving a “Recipient Not Found” response and complete delivery failure. These messages must be re-sent. This issue was resolved at approximately 1:00 PM on 7/17.

The second issue affected fewer than 10 Vmail users and a small number of resource accounts. These accounts had a legacy internal mail route in their primary SMTP address.  Mail routing for these users was restored at 11:00 AM, and the legacy addresses were updated. Technicians believe most, if not all, messages were delivered.
