Ballot 193 Passes with CA/Browser Forum

Posted by on Friday, April 14, 2017 in News.

Recently, the CA/Browser forum voted on Ballot 193 to reduce the maximum validity period (or ‘lifetime’) for Domain Validated (DV) or Organization Validated (OV) certificates from 39 months to 27 months (825 days).

The changes are as follows:

  • Effective almost immediately (April 22, 2017) – Decreases the amount of time that CAs can re-use previously gathered domain and organization authentication information from 39 months to 27 months (825 days).
  • Effective March 1, 2018 – Decreases the maximum validity period of SSL/TLS certificates to 27 months (825 days). In 2018, Symantec will no longer offer 3 year certificates.

This is an industry-wide change and it affects all Certificate Authorities such as GeoTrust.

Existing certificates are not affected by this change.
