Ils sont, par la profondeur et la densit\u00e9 de leur \u0153uvre, deux monuments de la litt\u00e9rature europ\u00e9enne dont ils d\u00e9passent les fronti\u00e8res. Comme l\u2019\u00e9crivait T.S. Eliot en 1929\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0<em>Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them; there is no third\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb (\u00ab\u00a0Dante et Shakespeare se partagent le monde moderne. Ils n\u2019ont pas d\u2019\u00e9quivalent\u00a0\u00bb). S\u2019il est possible de contester ce jugement, il n\u2019en reste pas moins que ces deux auteurs ont chacun \u00e0 leur fa\u00e7on port\u00e9 au plus haut la litt\u00e9rature et l\u2019esprit de leur temps. On peut, certes, se demander si les \u00e9crits de Dante ont eu une influence plus ou moins directe (par la m\u00e9diation de P\u00e9trarque) sur ceux de Shakespeare (et de ses contemporains).
