THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN FRENCH.
The Mediterranean was a place of exchange during the medieval period. Interactions between the many Mediterranean cultures took place on political and personal levels, involving the exchange of goods and services as well as art, literature, and cultural practices.
In this course we will look at the movements of people and of things around the Mediterranean basin between 1096 and 1350. While the Church called Christians to crusade to the Holy Land, literature and art tell additional stories, not entirely bound up in conflict. Literary works from France during this period will guide our study, as we like at the complex relationship between gender and religion, caught up in nascent nationalities.
