Mobilizing STEM Talent for STEM Teaching

Mobilizing STEM Talent for STEM Teaching is a Noyce program for STEM majors interested in exploring a career in teaching. The program offers support for students in the form of a generous stipend, mentoring by university and K-12 faculty, collaboration between education and STEM faculty, and educational plans that are individualized for each student. The Mobilizing STEM Talent for STEM Teaching Program at Vanderbilt is funded through the NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship Program (#1439866). The project is a collaborative effort between Vanderbilt University, Fisk University and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools to create a sustainable pipeline for STEM teachers.

Building a Pipeline of Teaching Excellence

Along with other universities, Vanderbilt serves as an IHE partner on this project funded by the Department of Education Investment in Innovation (I3) Grant to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. At a high level, we are exploring how the use of video cases from accomplished teachers (through ATLAS) can be used to facilitate pre-service teacher learning about practice. More focused questions have investigated how instructors design learning opportunities around case interaction; what the role of the facilitator is in supporting teacher engagement with the cases; and how interaction with the cases have supported pre-service teachers as they prepare for their culminating performance assessment, the edTPA.
