Position Description:

The College of Arts and Science invites applications for a Mellon Partners for Humanities Education Postdoctoral Fellowship in English at Berea College, 2021-2022. Applicants must be qualified to teach undergraduate courses in English and/or Art History, or courses in related fields (history, philosophy, etc.) which can be cross-listed with these subjects.

The Mellon Partners for Humanities Education, generously funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is a collaboration among five colleges and universities—Berea College, Fisk University, Tennessee State University, Tougaloo College, and Vanderbilt University. The partnership supports faculty development on all campuses involved; seeks to improve graduate education at Vanderbilt, while preparing students to meet the needs of diverse types of institutions; and enhances undergraduate education at partner schools.

One Mellon Partners Postdoctoral Fellowship will be awarded to an individual who received a PhD from Vanderbilt in the humanities between September 2017 and August 2021. The one-year fellowship—which will extend from fall, 2021, to the end of spring, 2022—will provide a salary of $52,074, benefits, a $2,500 research fund, and up to $2,500 for one-time moving expenses as compensation for a 1:1 teaching load and digital and/or public Humanities research at Berea College in Kentucky. Finalists will be notified in April and may be asked to participate in remote interviews with faculty from Berea College.

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (up to 5 pages)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation. One must be from the academic advisor. (If the candidate is ABD, the advisor’s letter should specifically address the likelihood of completing the degree by August 2021).
