Student Data Chats Guide
Overview
- Facilitate one-on-one discussions between teachers and students based on available student data that can be easily measured and tracked (such as academic grades).
Purpose
- The student data chat guide may be used by teachers to supplement their rapid check-ins with students.
- Using a consistent set of questions, teachers can guide students’ towards understanding their academic standing and help them strategize potential ways for improving their course grades and performance.
Implementation
- It is recommended that student data chats be implemented quarterly with each student. However, students who are struggling academically may need more frequent and consistent support.
Details
- Meet with each student individually during teacher-initiated, one-on-one rapid check-ins.
- These data chats should be discreet and conducted in an area of the classroom where sensitive information (such as student’s grades) cannot be overheard by other class members.
- Using the questions provided (see Student Data Chat Questions), teachers can guide students’ towards understanding their academic standing and help them strategize potential ways for improving their course grades and performance.
- The PASL teacher can pull up grades for the student, or have the student pull up their grades and class assignments.
- The teacher should walk the student through each of their classes to identify if additional support is needed or if challenges exist for particular classes.
- The Student Data Chats Record template may be used to record the information collected by the teacher during these discussions with students.
- The template includes sections for recording students’ grades, the steps agreed upon by the student to accomplish his/her/their academic goals, as well as the steps agreed upon by the teacher to support his/her/their students.
- Throughout the “data chat” exchange, the teacher should act as a support person and encourage the student to arrive at his/her/their own conclusions.
