National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute Fellowship

Title of Work
Sri Lanka’s Water-Food-Energy Nexus: An Economic Analysis of Water Allocation Schemes

Work Plan
Debra will spend two months in Singapore at the National University of Singapore working with Dennis Wichelns, the Director of the Institute for Water Policy at the Public Policy School.

Research
Debra’s EAPSI work will expose many of the nuances faced by Sri Lanka’s Mahaweli River Basin (MRB) in adequately allocating its water resources with respect to energy and food. She will use a recent development and resettlement plan to create a portfolio of scenarios to understand projected water supply and water demand within the MRB over the next twenty years. Opportunity cost theory will be used to explore the different water management scenarios and expose the tradeoffs involved in prioritizing water allocation in the MRB.
