Students choose (or can do both) activities that explore the experience of the state and people of Tennessee during the Civil War. These activities would be appropriate for middle school social studies classes or high school social studies classes. The history/geography activity would be appropriate for ESOL students or advanced elementary students.
History/Geography Activity
- Map the War: Students will draw the state of Tennessee and outline the locations and timeline of the battles of the Civil War that take place in Tennessee.
Presentational/Interpersonal Activity
- In groups of 3 students will each represent one of the 3 different zones of opinion on slavery in the state of Tennessee. After investigating and collecting information for their zone students will conduct a debate on the merits of the stance of each group after researching the zone you are assigned/have chosen.
