Things to Do and See While in Nashville

The Vanderbilt campus is located just over a mile from Downtown Nashville and there are several things to do and see while in town. Many downtown hot spots are walking distance from campus; others can be reached via a short cab ride. Both Uber and Lyft also offer transportation services in Nashville.

Cultural:

  • The Frist Center for the Visual Arts
    • Located just down the street from the Vanderbilt Campus, it features the work of internationally renowned artists.

  • The Tennessee State Museum
    • Located about 2.5 miles from campus, it features an interactive overview of Tennessee state history starting 13,000 BCE with the peopling of the Cumberland Plateau and surrounding regions and moving to present day.  The museum also hosts a number of traveling exhibits which change seasonally.

Music:

  • Station Inn.
    • Located in the historic Gulch neighborhood, Station Inn is the best place in the city to hear live bluegrass music.  Doors open and 7 pm and performances begin at 9 pm nightly. It’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance.

  • Robert’s Western World.
    • Located on lower Broadway and across from the famous Ryman Auditorium, Robert’s Western World is one of the most popular honky-tonks in town, featuring The Brazilbillies! Honky-tonks are bars where live country music is played and going “honky-tonking” is a Southern experience that is not to be missed!  Roberts fills up fast, so it is best to go early if you want to get a table.

Food:

Spring comes early to the mid-south, so by late March the daytime temperatures will typically be in the mid-60’s with plenty of sunshine.  However, the temperature can (and does) drop at night, so be sure to bring a jacket!
