VKC Website

This section of the KCTECH blog documents the website content management process for website content editors.

VKC Website Management Overview

The VKC website is displays pages using information that is read from a database when a page is requested. The database information is edited using a custom content manager interface written at the VKC.  Web editors can control content that is displayed using the content management system (CMS).

The website programming knows what content to pull from the database but looking at the URL that is sent to the site on the web server. The content is driven by pages and therefore URLs must be unique.  When a new page is created in the CMS it check to be sure that the URL is not in use already and does not allow that to happen.

The CMS require proper permission to be granted using VUNetIDs that are located in the Vanderbilt active directory but the CMS can be installed on any PC running Windows XP or higher.  The link to install the content manager is here:

If you would like to use the CMS and it is not working send an email to kctech@vanderbilt.edu.

A web page on the VKC site is made up of reusable components. Once a component is created, it can be reused on several pages. This is particularly good for things like menus that are to be continued across a section of the site.  It is important to realize this when working with components because you may be editing content on other pages if you edit a component. See the section on components for more information about each component type.  Most components can be duplicated if you are in doubt.

This site also contains additional tutorial descriptions about using the CMS and components.  All the descriptive pages are available under this VKC Website menu selection above.
