Course Blog – Cultural Engagement and Exploration (2016)

We have arrived!  On May 9, 2016 the Maymester in Sicily participants arrived in Cefalù to start our study of Mediterranean culture.  It was an adventurous day as several students missed connections, had to be rebooked on different flights, and a handful arrived without their luggage.  However, we were able to enjoy a delicious pasta dinner together at Al Porticciolo before settling in for a good night’s sleep.

And now begins our big adventure……

Shared Palermo/Monreale Post

Signora wanted me to share this response with you all, a personal reflection from me about visiting the church at Monreale. Enjoy! I remember my Sundays when I was a young girl of 5 or 6. I was always excited; I would go to early CCD class, and then mass with my family, followed by...... KEEP READING

Observation of Two Men in Piazza Girabaldi

On June 1, 2016, I sat next to a table of two men at Porta Terra. I sat down around 12:50pm. Our tables were directly adjacent to each other. One man appeared to be in his 20s while the other looked to be in his 60s. The younger of the two was wearing light wash...... KEEP READING

My Observations on Sicilian People and Food

After living in Cefalù for the past three weeks, I’ve noticed several differences between Sicily and America. For example, most male and female public toilets do not have the top-seat attached. People here prefer espresso than any other coffee drink. Stores close from 1 to 4 in the afternoon for a lunch and nap break....... KEEP READING

My Interview with GianLuca of Pizzica

I interviewed GianLuca, who lives in Cefalù with his wife Barbara. If you have ever entered the pizza take-away store Pizzica, GianLuca is the tall man with curly hair and glasses that always greets you with the biggest of smiles.  He and his wife started Pizzica four years ago and it consistently sells some of...... Andrew R Pokorny At the heart of Cefalu sits the Norman Cathedral and surrounding piazza filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes.  For an hour on a Monday at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I sat down at one of cafes in the Duomo and began to watch the people around me.  One reason I...... The People of Club Maljk

I went to Club Maljk, on the Lungomare between two and five pm. Club Maljk is a beach club, which features a bar, lunch tables, lounges, and a pool. The group I focused on was in their early to mid twenties. There were five men and three women. They were almost all brunette, except for...... KEEP READING

Cefalú Lungomare

As I spent my time lounging under the sun on the Cefalú lungomare, I quietly observed the population around me. My ultimate conclusion from this activity was that Sicilian men’s favorite pastime is women. I first noticed females coming to the beach often alone, just to tan for a few hours and mind their own...... KEEP READING

Familiar Strangers Observation

As I sit at a table in the Duomo, I realize that I have only been here one week, but I already recognize some familiar faces of strangers that I have never met and will probably never meet. I recognize the middle-aged man that only seems to have two hobbies in life: smoking and walking...... KEEP READING
