Available Topics

We know that most every kid can get into astronomy and we can help!  Topics that can be addressed in the planetarium include (click on the links for pictures of some of what the students would see in the dome):

  1. star field / constellations (note that every show starts with this view) and see the bullets below to see what sorts of things we can talk about using this “star field”:
    • the meaning of time periods (days, months, years) (note: this is short, only a few minutes)
    • the Sun-Earth-Moon system (in a crude sense as we cannot show eclipses nor successive phases – but we can help in understanding positioning) (note: this is short, only a few minutes)
    • planetary positions
    • star colors and other properties
    • star chart/wheel usage (this requires time – shows must be at least 50 min long to do this)
    • light pollution (note: this is short, only a few minutes)
  2. the mythology behind constellations (Greek, African, and Native American) -> this is a great way to incorporate cross-disciplinary studies!  Greek Mythology is our most popular request!
  3. size and scale of the Solar System and the Galaxy
  4. coordinate systems (i.e. Right Ascension and Declination) and precession (mostly for grades 8 and above)
  5. astrology (why it came to be and what we think of it now) and the ecliptic
