The Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (VRWC) will begin 24/7 Exam Study Space hours on Wednesday, April 26 and continue until May 4 at 7am. Students will be able to utilize several areas within the VRWC including on the first floor: all the study areas, gym courts, racquetball courts, the main fitness room, and the Field House. On the second floor, students will be able to use the indoor track, cardio loft fitness area, and conference room. Students will have access to the print station, located by the Welcome Desk which is part of the VU Print system. The VRWC is remaining open, so students will have a place to focus on being successful in both their academics and their overall wellbeing. Make sure to bring your VU ID to gain access to facility.

Additionally, take advantage of the following stress-busting activities:

  • April 26th-May 3rd: Dodgeball HOUR Racquetball Court 2 @ 5pm-6pm
  • April 27th: Yoga on the Lawn on Library Lawn @ 12 pm-12:45pm
  • April 27th: Coffee and Treats from 10pm-Midnight in the Lounge

  • April 28th: Game night in the Lounge from Noon to 11pm
  • April 29th: Knockout games Gym Court 1 | 5pm-6pm
  • May 1st: Game night in the Lounge, Noon to 11pm
  • May 2nd: Candlelight Yoga class Studio 5 @ 9pm

The Office of Housing and Residential Education and the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center invite you to Stress Less Spring Fest, Monday, April 24th from 6-10pm at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center. This is a great time to relax and unwind before finals begin! Take advantage of free food, and activities like a petting zoo, meditation, yoga classes, a hammock village, facials, massages, and more!

Join the celebration as Vanderbilt recognizes Employee Health and Fitness Day to inspire and sustain healthy lifestyle actions at work! This annual event held every May showcases numerous opportunities available at work to support our health.

 

Activities will include a free one day pass to the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (VRWC). Kick off your day with an early morning swim, enjoy grab and go smoothie samples, get your Know Your Numbers with Health Plus, or join in group fitness classes offered throughout the day.

 

At lunch taste healthy food samples at the RAND promenade. Other lunch time events include Walking Wednesdays, Yoga on the Lawn, and a departmental Team Walking Relay, plus more.

Later in the day, enjoy a water aerobics class, bring your bike for a check-up by Cumberland Transit or bring friends and family for a swim.

Join Tammy Algood, spokesperson for the statewide “Pick Tennessee Products” campaign as she shares recipes and tips for creating a one pot pasta dish and a dessert made delicious with fruit and cheese at the upcoming April Vandy Cooks. Topping these dishes off enjoy a kale muffin that can be eaten any time of day. This presentation will be in held in the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center demonstration kitchen Tuesday, April 18th at noon.

 

Ms. Algood writes about food for The Tennessean and monthly Tennessee Magazine. As a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, she also develops recipes for the website at www.picktnproducts.org. Broadcast appearances include Nashville’s local ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates as well as statewide on PBS. Ms. Algood can also be seen nationally on the HGTV and DIY networks.

In the event of rain, join the 11:30 a.m. Vinyasa yoga class in S5 at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center.

Join Lori Cowan, Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center group fitness coordinator, for a 45-minute outdoor yoga class that will rejuvenate and de-stress you while providing the opportunity to enjoy the spring weather on Vanderbilt’s campus. Yoga mats and equipment will be provided. Remember to wear comfortable clothing.

Cowan is a certified yoga instructor and has more than 20 years of teaching and management experience in the group fitness industry.

The event is sponsored by the VRWC and open to the Vanderbilt community.

The Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center(VRWC) and Vanderbilt Outdoor Recreation will host “Commodore Climb 3:The Chalk Knight Rises” on Monday, April 3 at the VRWC Climbing Wall.

 

There will be two sessions:

Session 1: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Session 2: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

 

The third annual Commodore bouldering competition is free and open to Vanderbilt students and VRWC members. Competitors of all skill levels, from beginners to regulars, are encouraged to participate.

 

There will be four categories in which to compete: Female Beginner (V1-V2), Male Beginner (V1-V2), Female Intermediate (V3+), and Male Intermediate (V3+). The top three climbers in each category will receive a prize!

 

Participants can reserve their climbing and bouldering time slots before the event. Time slots will go quickly, so reserve your spot today by going here.

Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center Demonstration Kitchen

Love Indian cuisine, but think it may be too difficult to prepare? Kalyani and Venkataraman Amarnath are back by demand following their popular demonstration in June of last year. Once again they will share additional favorite native recipes chosen for ease of preparation, as well as taste.  At this session, you will receive tips on Indian spices and best places to purchase recipe ingredients in the Nashville area. This presentation will be in held in the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center demonstration kitchen Wednesday, March 22nd at noon.

 

Both presenters are researchers in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and are from Tamil Nadu, India. In this Vandy Cooks, they will create personal favorite recipes such as Pilaf Rice, Carrot Salad, and Raitha. Samples will be provided along with recipes for all dishes and their nutrition analysis.

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures, or simply see the world beneath the waves, this is where it starts. This spring the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center is hosting Scuba Shack’s PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Certification. The certification course is open to Vanderbilt University faculty, staff, students, and VRWC community members!

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle. The course will take place in a VRWC classroom, the VRWC pool and local dive sites under the supervision of your PADI Instructor.

The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three phases:

  1.     Knowledge Development- (classroom at VU + DVD home study) – basic principles of scuba diving
  2.     Confined Water Dives- Vanderbilt to learn basic scuba skills
  3.     Open Water Dives- various destinations to review your skills and explore – Lifetime Certification!

  • PADI Textbook & materials + the PADI Certification Card- $110
  • Scuba equipment rental (3 pool sessions and 2 open water sessions) + air tank fills- $175
  • Professional Instruction (25-28 hours): Classroom, Pool, and Open Water Sessions- $100
  • Quarry entry fees- $40

On Monday, January 16th, the VRWC outdoor track will be open again for use. Please note the following open hours, expected closures for reservations, and renovations.

  • The outdoor track will be open Monday through Friday 5am-2pm
  • Open on Saturday’s 8am-5pm pending Varsity reservations
  • Open on Sunday’s 12-5pm pending Varsity reservations
  • The track will be closed for repair on Feb. 1st-10th and April 1st until track renovation is completed.
  • The track will be closed Feb. 23-25th as Vanderbilt hosts the SEC Indoor Track Championship.
