In the Department of Teaching and Learning in Vanderbilt University Peabody College, our Multilingual Education program offers an M.Ed. with 4 tracks, an undergraduate major in Multilingual & Multicultural Studies, and a minor in Multilingual Learner Education.
Multilingual Education M.Ed.
The Multilingual Education M.Ed. is a unique program blending research in applied linguistics and learning sciences with cutting-edge, practical application empowers you to understand how people learn in multilingual and multicultural contexts. Expand your expertise in multilingual and multimodal learning, language sciences, and learner-centered design and pedagogy.
- Applied Languages and Literacies Studies (30 credits). Build expertise in applied linguistics and language sciences research.
- Teaching Multilingual Learners: Initial Licensure (33 credits). Earn initial licensure to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in PK-12 settings.
- Teaching Multilingual Learners: Add-on ESL Endorsement (30 credits). Add ESL endorsement to your initial licensure and/or earn a specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
- World Languages with ESL Endorsement (33 credits). Earn initial licensure to teach Spanish, French, German, Chinese, or Latin, with an added ESL endorsement.
In this M.Ed., students can focus on building skills such as language curriculum design, methods of language teaching, policy analysis, program evaluation, and assessment of multilingual learners. In the ALLS track, students can develop skills in scholarly and public writing, data analysis, and applying theories of multilingual learning.
Multilingual & Multicultural Studies 2nd major
This interdisciplinary second major in Multilingual and Multicultural Studies prepares you for dynamic, globally focused careers where language and cultural expertise are essential. Choose from two tracks – Language, Culture, and Learning or English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Licensure – to match your goals. Graduates are equipped to teach multilingual learners, work in international education and nonprofit sectors, pursue advanced studies in linguistics or language policy, and lead in global, multilingual workplaces.
