Multilingual Learner Education M.Ed., Major, and Minor

Housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning in Vanderbilt University Peabody College, our Multilingual Learner Education program offers an M.Ed. with 2 tracks, an undergraduate major, and an undergraduate minor.

M.Ed. students can focus on (1) Teaching Multilingual Learners or (2) Applied Language and Literacies Studies. In the first track, students can focus on building skills such as language curriculum design, methods of language teaching, and assessment of multilingual learners. In the ALLS track, students can develop skills in scholarly and public writing, data analysis, and applying theories of multilingual learning.

Our 36-credit major and 15-credit minor are open to students across VU’s colleges. This Second Language Studies enables students to develop their own multilingualism while growing skills to serve multilingual communities (in teaching or other community development roles).  The Multilingual Learner Education minor aligns with the courses required for teachers to earn an add-on endorsement in teaching English as a Second Language.
