October 2023

-VU-WiSE is excited to launch a mentoring program where early graduate students and undergraduates are paired with senior graduate student mentors. This is a great opportunity for mentees to learn more about graduate school and for mentors to help the next generation of females in STEM succeed. This program will help to foster new peer connections in the Vanderbilt community and will also include coffee meet ups hosted by VU-WISE. Are you interested in being a mentor or mentee? Fill out the following form to be paired with a mentee/mentor! (

General Body Meeting

June 2017
June 30 – Thank you all for coming out to our Summer BBQ Picnic at Dragon Park! We had a fantastic turn out and a lot of fun getting to know each other.

May 2017
May 11 – In our efforts to reach students outside of Davidson County, VU-WiSE Outreach team traveled to Rutherford County to do science and engineering demonstrations for 3rd grade classes. Volunteers lead biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science stations.

March 2017
March 21 – Vanderbilt School of Engineering had a very successful Women in STEM day! We thoroughly enjoyed the guest speaker, Rachel Swaby, and her fantastic telling of important yet less-acknowledged women’s stories in STEM. They even were giving out her book Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science—And the World. Check it out! We thank the women from Vanderbilt who contributed their time to sitting on the panel. Hearing about your experiences was invaluable! See more about the day here:

January 2017
January 23 – VU-WiSE Book Club was made even better this year by working with The Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center to host a discussion on Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly. Thank you everyone for contributing to the conversation!

November 2016
November 3 – VU-WiSE undergraduate women interested in research toured labs of some of volunteer graduate students. The labs visited included biophotonics, physics, structural biology, and more! We considered this event a huge success considering many of the students ended up with research opportunities from the experience!

September 2016
September 8 – VU-WiSE teamed up with BlackRock, the well-known investment management corporation, for a Women’s Networking Lunch at Soulshine Pizza Factory. This was an informal lunch for women interested in this field to stop by at any time to learn more about the firm and network with alumni and BlackRock professionals. Thank you BlackRock for reaching out to us and making this opportunity available to our members!

September 2015
September 24 – Thank you to Courtney Mitchell for planning such a great event bringing VU-WiSE and SWE of Nashville together! This was the perfect networking social and we were excited that students from other schools in the area were also able to join us.

July 2014
VU-WiSE hosted 50 students (middle and high school) and volunteers from Preston Taylor Ministries’ Summer Program for a 2-hour hands-on science and engineering outreach day. The event started with boxed lunches, while a panel of graduate/professional students discussed their academic journey and what got them involved in STEM. Students were prepared with thought-provoking questions, as the panelists from medicine, engineering, and science answered with excitement. After the panel session, students participated in breakout rotations for an absorption vs. desorption (Science) and rocket launchers (Engineering) activity. The event was a great success, and the students really seemed to be interested in pursuing STEM careers.

March 2014
March 24 – We all had a wonderful time celebrating at the Women in STEM luncheon. A special thanks to Dean Greene, who gave an inspiring talk about her research and provided useful advice to aspiring women in STEM.

January 2014
January 9 – VUWiSE held a general meeting, where we discussed updates about our programming (with a focus on outreach, mentoring, and social events), held officer elections, formed committees, and discussed plans for future events. The energy in the room was positive — we are already forming a great community!

December 2013
December 12 – VUWiSE hosted a holiday cookies and coffee gathering at the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center. The turn-out was fantastic and the cookies were delicious!

November 2013
November 5 – We hosted a fun and informative luncheon with a focus on balancing work and life as a scientist. See our home page for pictures!

November 1 – VUWiSE held the first interest meeting, which was well-attended by Vanderbilt women in science and engineering in all stages of their careers. The gears are turning for a fantastic mentorship program and luncheon series as well as a focus on outreach!
