Presentation Title: Toward a Culturally Sustaining Third Space for Chinese International Students in Preservice Science Teacher Education

Presentation Abstract: The rich Chinese cultural and linguistic backgrounds of Chinese international students (CIS) are often overlooked as resources to negotiate new ways of learning in science learning spaces. Instead, Third Spaces are where students’ home and communal knowledges come into productive contact with their science learning. However, few studies in science education have examined how these spaces are interactionally constructed or enacted. This study examines how a PST course functions as a Third Space for CIS and what supported its emergence.
