Presentation Title: Storytime on the Syllabus: Examining how role-play during read-aloud rehearsals prepares Iraqi pre-service teachers for practice

Presentation Abstract: In response to education concerns resulting from conflict in Iraq, their government highlighted a need for equipping teachers. However, minimal research has explored teacher preparation strategies in post-conflict climates. Addressing this gap, the current design-based study uses qualitative techniques to examine how a practice-based rehearsal strategy integrated into a course syllabus helped prepare an inaugural cohort of Iraqi pre-service teachers (PSTs) to conduct an interactive read-aloud for their first practicum school visit. Utilizing a sociocultural lens, I took a grounded theory approach to analysis, iteratively viewing data from rehearsals and final interviews. Findings include a model of how intentional interactions throughout role-shifting during rehearsals led to perceptions of preparedness for practice. Implications include pedagogical and methodological recommendations for pre-service teacher education.
