Poster Title: “I Want Them to Love Learning and Have Fun”:
Unpacking the Complex Work of Teacher-Child Interactions during Math Play

Poster Abstract: This study examines teacher–child interactions during kindergarten math play in a public charter school. Building on current literature on guided play and video analysis of 77 interaction episodes, the findings reveal three ways in which teacher–child interactions shape math learning opportunities: restoring and maintaining the integrity of curricular math, surfacing math in play, and exploring math through play. Using illustrative episodes and a framework of tools, rules, and agendas that conceptualize the negotiations during teacher–child interactions, the study illuminates the complex work of implementing math play in the classroom and calls for greater attention to children’s framings during play.
