VUMC IT to perform VDC Router Lifecycle

Posted by on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 in Outage.

On Friday, Nov. 11, between 11:35 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., VUMC IT will perform change COO68671.  This change covers the work required to migrate all layer three and layer two components from the legacy Cisco Catalyst 6509 and Catalyst 6513 routers to the new Cisco Nexus 7710 routers. There will be a rolling outage for every network within the Vanderbilt University Hospital Data Center (VUHDC.) The outage should last no longer than five minutes per network, and will begin at 11:35 p.m., continuing until all networks have been migrated.

To ensure application stability, many databases and applications in the VUHDC will either be shut down or failed over to ensure that no data corruption or system instability occurs. VDC-Migration-Timeline is a list of systems that will be failed over or shut down.  At 11:35 p.m. applications will be either failed or shut down, once the change is complete they will be restarted, approximately 1:30 a.m.

Affected groups must ensure that testers are available to verify reachability and function of the applications and services they support after the change has been completed.  A testing conference call has been established for users to obtain progress updates and technical assistance, if needed. Call details include:

  • The testing bridge will begin at 12:30 a.m. and last until at least 5:30 a.m.
  • Call (615) 343-6048 to join and request the “NGN Router Testing” conference bridge.
  • Testers are not required to join the testing conference bridge; however, VUMC IT strongly recommends that all application/device owners test reachability, application functionality, and any VUHDC related router dependencies immediately after the networks have been migrated.

Please contact Chris Marshall Chris.Marshall@Vanderbilt.edu if you have any questions or comments regarding the change.
