I am presenting a poster in a Learning Sciences SIG poster session about 4th graders’ computational image manipulation in an afterschool program. Students imported and animated found images by turning each pixel into a programmable agent. I was surprised by their choices: they imported images of their family members and created funny animations, like troll hair sprouting out of bald spots. Their spontaneous activity created substantial learning opportunities in computer science and geometry. Additionally, their work provokes questions about image as a hot context for beginners’ goal-oriented computation. Bonus take: Jasmine’s in this same session, so come to see her and also stop by my poster.
