Hong Kong, China, Japan, France (2000) Dir: Zhangke Jia. A group of amateur theatre troupe performers’ fate mirrors the general population in China as massive socio-economic changes sweep across the mainland. It begins in 1979 with the troup performing numbers idolizing Mao Zedong, ending in the 80s when the shows reflect strong Western influences pervading China. Mandarin and Shanxi with English subtitles. DVD. 154 minutes. Funding provided by the Program in Cinema & Media Arts. Takes place in Sarratt Cinema.
