World on Wednesday: Improving Education in Qing Hai, China Details
Posted by radhika.reddy@Vanderbilt.Edu on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in Activities Everyone.
Location: Student Life Center Lower Level Meeting Rooms 1 & 2
In the Qing Hai province of China, there are a number of issues that complicate efforts to improve the quality of education, especially for nomadic peoples. One challenge, for example, is how to offer bilingual education to all students; minority languages are legally granted equal status to Mandarin, but national examinations favor the dominant language. Similarly, educators struggle to teach effectively using a standardized curriculum; despite wide variation in geography, agriculture, climate, language, and local customs, the same subjects are taught with the same materials throughout the country. Join Lhamo Dongtse, a Tibetan educational leader in Qing Hai province and a current Humphrey Fellow, as she addresses these and other challenges, and hear her describe how she endeavors to improve educational opportunities for her region’s most disadvantaged groups. Lunch is provided.
