Microfinance and the Empowerment of Women
Presented by Dr. Kathryn Anderson/Professor of Economics/Margaret Cumminggim Women’s Center
The microfinance movement in developing countries began with a small loan from Mohammad Yunus to a women in Bangladesh. Most microfinance loans today are given to women in developing countries. Women are more likely to repay their loans than men, but it is less clear whether micro-lending has significantly improved their lives. I review the most recent literature on the impact of microfinance on the poverty, human capital, and empowerment of women. I illustrate this review with evidence from my ongoing microfinance project in Kyrgyzstan.
