Summary

My work in the analysis, design and delivery of CDS applications has provided me with insight into the state of the art of clinical knowledge management. The complexity of current clinical information systems poses non-trivial challenges for knowledge management, specifically in the areas of structural validation (i.e. constraint checking), structural composition that focuses on content reuse and aids the reduction of duplicate content, and easing of the cognitive load on content curators. These requirements are especially relevant to CDS applications that utilize large-scale knowledge-bases. The evaluation of dedicated commercial off-the-shelf applications available in this space has shown that these are still open challenges in the industry. My work focuses on delivering methods and solutions for managing complexity.
