Teaching

DynamicEarthFTI am avidly interested in teaching.  I use the same research techniques to solve teaching problems that I do to solve geologic problems.  I use evidence-based methods in my classrooms and am always striving to find new ways to improve student engagement and learning. See a profile on my teaching at the Vanderbilt Center for Teaching website here.

I am particularly interested in the following topics:

  • Equity and Inclusion in STEM courses
  • Ungrading
  • Teaching Outside the Classroom and best practices in mentoring Undergraduate Research
  • Evaluations of Teaching
  • Student Motivation
  • Academic Inquiry
  • Peer to Peer Instruction and Flipped Classrooms

I currently teach the following courses:

CSET 3310: Geological Filmmaking: Understanding Deep Time through Cinema

EES 4891: Community Engaged Science

EES 1001-02: Observing the Earth

EES 1510: Dynamic Earth: Introduction to Physical Geology
