A True Italian Meal
Italy is the ideal place to take a cooking class; I love pasta, pizza, basically any type of Italian food ever. So I was over the moon when I learned that we were going up into the mountains to take a cooking class and simultaneously cook a lovely Italian dinner for ourselves. It was quite...... KEEP READING

Family Excursion to Ventimiglia
I was invited by my classmate Peter to hang out with his family that lives here in Sicily in a small, triangular town surrounded by mountains and beautiful open views, named Ventimiglia (of which Peter’s aunt Antuonella specified was not to be translated literally as ‘twenty mile’, but as the name of the former ruler...... Church in Cefalù
Post with pictures: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DNxAuDqsa9WZXQZgtrur5x7ARb7XwvWuvjx_fbj1jbI/edit?usp=sharing When I decided to apply to this particular Maymester in Sicily, I did so not only because of the location’s cultural and historical significance in the Mediterranean, but also, more largely, because of Italy’s religious importance for Catholics. As a Catholic, ever since I was a little girl completing my religious education,...... KEEP READING

Appreciating Nature in a New Way
This view definitely required a hike, but every step was worth it from the top Vanderbilt girls are notorious for loving hikes. They all want to stay fit and fill their Instagram feeds at the same time. I dare you to find one who doesn’t own an Eno. However, their affinity for the great outdoors only...... KEEP READING

A Day on the Sea
Today we rented a boat and explored the coastline of Sicily near Cefalu’. This was one of the most enjoyable and relaxing activities of the trip. The process of renting a boat was extremely easy as we were out to sea nearly ten minutes after arriving in the harbor. The process was infinitely more convenient...... KEEP READING

Boat Rental
On Saturday, the 20th, four of us planned to rent a boat and drive it around the region. We stopped near the villas to pick up some food to take with us, then walked to the Cefalu marina and rented a motorboat for the half-day. After Soccy got the price decreased by $10, something...... La necessità di velocità
pic.twitter.com/6zVXyrQVr6 — MikeyP (@michaelbpelleg1) May 20, 2017 On Friday, the 19th of May I saw my life flash before my eyes. A moped trip from Palermo to Cefalu turned to disaster when I attempted to cut a bus off around a tight curve and too much lean caused the wheels to slip out from underneath...... KEEP READING

We Drove Vespas for 75 kilometers and Didn’t Die!
Yesterday was quite possibly the best day of my exploration of Sicily thus far: We started out by having class in my favorite part of Cefalú, the baths. Then, it was time for the adventure to begin. Michael Pellegrino and I rented scooters from a small shop in Cefalú with one goal in mind: get...... KEEP READING

The Responsibilities of Freedom
Climbing up to the top of La Roca this morning was a truly phenomenal experience with an unparalleled view that simply could not be captured in a photograph. As my friend and I made our way through the ancient ruins of the castle and archeological sites at the end of the trail, I was struck...... KEEP READING

Aeolian Island Adventures
Two days ago, a couple of us took a boat over to the Aeolian Islands for the day. The opportunity came up last minute, and we signed up without having much of an idea what to expect. We left from Cefalú around 8:30 am and traveled to the islands by boat. Once we arrived at...... KEEP READING

Corso di Cucina in the Mountains
On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to go up into the mountains of Cefalù and take a cooking class. After a curvy bus ride and 15-minute uphill hike, we finally made it to our destination. Our class was held in Nino’s modern home, complete with a large kitchen, extensive garden space, and plenty of seating...... KEEP READING

Sleeping (sort of) and social life in Cefalú
While I have faced many challenges here in Cefalú, the hardest has been trying to sleep. My roommates and I live in the apartments right next to the beach, which has its advantages, but we also live right above at least 3 bars and multiple restaurants. While this has allowed us to observe the night...... KEEP READING

Hiking La Rocca
Since first arriving in Cefalù, hiking La Rocca was one of the things I was most excited for. La Rocca is significant to Cefalù, because it is the large rock that is unique to the town and also likely gives the town its name. Like I said in my earlier blog post, it is likely...... KEEP READING

Off the grid
Before coming to Sicily I had been told by all of my friends who went abroad that communicating with people back home was going to be difficult. While I listened to their warnings, I did not necessarily believe them that it would be that difficult. I was very wrong about how it would be trying...... KEEP READING

The Cabs Are Heeeyuh
Instead of climbing La Rocca on Thursday, a group of us decided to take an island-hopping trip to Salina, Panarea and Stromboli. The towns we stopped in were set on the side of a mountain on the water, similar to Cefalu, except far less populated. Out of the three stops, Panarea was my favorite. Panarea...... KEEP READING
