Vanderbilt LGBT Policy Lab Director Kitt Carpenter and Policy Lab Member Gilbert Gonzales presented research at the Fall Research Conference of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management in Chicago on Nov. 3, 2017. APPAM is the premiere research association for public policy studies in the United States, and the national conference draws thousands of public policy researchers from across the world.

Carpenter and Gonzales presented in an organized session titled “Policy Relevant Research on Sexual and Gender Minorities.” Gonzales presented research funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on the effect of legal access to same-sex marriage on health insurance coverage of children. Carpenter presented research on the effects of legal same-sex marriage on attitudes toward sexual minorities in Europe.

Other papers in the session included an audit experiment addressing housing discrimination against same-sex couples and the effect of gender-inclusive training in public schools. Scholars, government officials and practitioners attended the research session to exchange ideas relevant to LGBT public policy, and Carpenter promoted the Vanderbilt LGBT Policy Lab throughout the conference.

Policy lab members also conducted interviews for the Policy Lab’s postdoctoral position in LGBT Policy Studies at the conference. Overall the conference was an excellent forum to highlight the Vanderbilt LGBT Policy Lab on a national scale!
