Our recent work on guided mid- and near-IR light in a hybrid system just published in Advanced Materials, and it is also on the research news of the School of Engineering! With hyperbolic phonon polaritons supported by hexagonal boron nitride, the mid-IR light is confined to a small length scale, and guided along a silicon waveguide underneath hBN. Additionally, the guiding of near-IR signal in the silicon waveguide is not affected, thus the system could guide mid-and near-IR at the same time. It is a collaboration work with Prof. Weiss at Vanderbilt, Prof. Folland at Iowa University, Prof. Basov at Columbia University and Prof. Edgar at Kansas State University.
